Create a modified high tunnel on the UW Farm.
This will extend the growing season and provide more food to the UW food pantry when the most students are on campus. It will also be outfitted with a rain-harvesting system and solar panels, so the goal is to leave a net-zero environmental impact.
Progress Summary
SP25: Created 3 subteams: Groundwork, water, and solar to handle the different components of the project. Got up to speed on what is needed for the project and started working on a site plan and water details. Built caterpillar tunnels on the UW Farm as they are similar to the resiliency tunnel and give us an idea of what it will look like in person.
SU25: Prepared a preliminary site plan to send to the City of Seattle. Filled out supporting documents to prepare for the City of Seattle site visit. City reviewed site plan and started working on feedback.
AU25: Received feedback from City of Seattle on site plan. Changed solar team to CAD team as there was a lot more CAD work that needed to be done to complete the plans.
Surveyed the work area to get contour lines for the plans. Contacted frame supply companies to get quotes on different frames. Chose a water tank to purchase for the project. Updated site plan and added cover sheet, general notes, landscaping, erosion control, floor and roof plans. Contacted geotech firms to see if they will help us on the project.
Current and Future Objectives
Figuring out final tunnel design and working with frame supply companies. Getting quotes from geotech firms. Purchasing a water tank. Purchasing concrete blocks (after design is finalized). Asking STF to extend permit deadline. Submitting plan corrections to City of Seattle. Start construction.
