Location: Chevak, Alaska
Leads: Roshan Paul and Evelyn Su
Timeline: September 2024 to Present
This project works with FEMA to address an ongoing erosion issue to meet the needs of the local residents.
We aim to design and build a system of rain gardens to provide a long-term solution to the erosion.
Progress Summary
A24 – S25: brainstorm ideas of rain gardens, compile data from timeline of erosion progress in Chevak. See which types of plants are available and compatible, decide whether to focus on rain gardens or permeable surfaces.
A25 – present: Decided on rain gardens. Look through plants available and compatible with soil, find connections to bring soil to Seattle and test. Test different types of soil samples, amount of rain, and tilt of floor with the help of UW Farm. Look over private/public property and grants for project.
Current and Future Objectives
A24: Design rain garden experiment. Finalize resource suppliers for experiment. Start research into grants.
W25: Design rain garden design and locations, with finalized plants. Validate compatibility with elevation and tilt using rain garden experiment.
S25: Get soil samples, test soil, send geosurveyor, start implementation.
Summer: Finish implementation.
